A presentation of the St Helena Images Project was held at Anne’s Place last Friday afternoon. It was hosted by the Museum of St Helena and the Chairman of the Heritage Society introduced Kyle Williamson, a photographer who arrived on the Island on 13th June. He is creating a documentary in still images of the
Island as it is now in conjunction with the Museum.
On Saint FM on Saturday morning, Kyle said that “Basically, what I am doing is to go around taking photographs of people, places things to create a document of life is like here in St Helena at this time”
The photographs can be seen as a historical record for the future. If the airport is built, we do not know what
changes will take place. The photos will give a comparison between now and then.
So far he has taken over 1,000 photographs from the Longwood, Hutt’s Gate and Rupert’s areas and he said that he will take several thousands of pictures of the Island before he leaves. All the pictures are labelled with GPS (Global Positioning System) to know the exact position from where the photographs were taken. The pictures will also be tagged with the name of the location and organised in different categories like
people, places and events. Many changes will be occurring in the future, such as air access and other
development. The catalogue, or directory, compiled by Kyle, will be a benchmark of what life is like in 2008
As the project is going through the Museum, it is up to them how access to the pictures will be provided in the future but Kyle said that there will be an exhibition later during his stay, hopefully towards the end of August, where people can come and see the photographs, some in print and others on the computer.

Kyle is also inviting the youth to take photographs and videos of the Island from a youth perspective.
The short presentation last Friday was rounded off with light refreshments |
