Mr George Benjamin had a long career with the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department where he made an outstanding contribution to the rescue and propagation of St Helena's rare and endangered plants. He was responsible for the re-discovery of the St Helena Olive in 1976 and the She-Cabbage Tree in 1978, both species presumed to be extinct. Mr Benjamin was awarded the BEM in recognition of his service in the cause of St Helena's endemic plants.
