On 21st May 2002, the quincentenary of the island’s discovery the Museum of St Helena was officially opened by His Excellency Governor Hollamby; a fitting occasion to inaugurate a new museum, a source of pride and interest for all St Helenians – Saints.

The Museum is set in a late 18th-Century stone building, formerly the old Power Station, at the foot of the Ladder in lower Jamestown. This beautifully restored building is a showcase for St. Helena's National Heritage.

Since its opening the Museum has provided a much needed focus for the community and for visitors to the Island, and for many has been the base point for further island exploration.

An annual programme of temporary exhibitions encourages repeat visits from islanders as well as tourists. Since it opened in 2002 the Museum has hosted over 14,000 visitors.

SHG recognises its commitment to maintain this important asset and is meeting the cost of employing and training the new local curator.
