newsletter no.18 - july 2008 - ARCHAEOLOGY IN RUPERT’S VALLEY

The focus of attention at the moment is the Slave Cemeteries. The burial areas were soon found to be larger than previous, less detailed surveys, had anticipated.  The three archaeologists are helped by a team of 25 or so volunteers recruited by the National Trust.  While work has progressed at a reasonable pace, the extent of the larger area to be surveyed is causing the planners to review the original arrangements.  We should have more information on this soon.  Restoration of the desalinisation chimney in Rupert’s is also planned.  All archaeological sites are to be protected from the haul road and landing facilities construction work which is part of the Air Access project.

The archaeologists are also helping the National Trust with the National Heritage Database, which is being built up with detailed information on the Island’s fortifications, listed & historic buildings, historically important artefacts and small structures.  They are also giving advice on the best way to record buildings and other structures.
