Having worked on the Isle of Islay, Scotland with the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) on a farm and nature reserve for a good few years, my sabbatical was due and the opportunity came to head to St. Helena….
The Department for International Development (DFID) commissioned the RSPB to provide technical assistance to St. Helena Government’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Development (ANRD). The project involves restoring pastureland to compensate for Wirebird habitat expected to be lost if the proposed airport development goes ahead. The aim is to restore sites as soon as possible so these sites can take displaced birds once airport development takes place.
My work on St. Helena concentrated on carrying out a survey on behalf of the Access Wirebird Mitigation Project by means of a questionnaire to farmers/graziers/land owners. Covering letters were sent out to all concerned along with a copy of the questionnaire. Once received, three local people were appointed to conduct interviews along with myself. I also managed to get out and about and help with one of the sheep gathers. Being involved with this made me aware of some additional, related issues.
Once completed the questionnaires were collected and returned. All were taken back with me to the UK where they are undergoing analysis and the information condensed into a report for the A&NRD. A better understanding of the problems faced and current satisfaction with regard to farming issues will provide a baseline for the Access Wirebird Mitigation Project to work with.
I absolutely loved my time on St. Helena. I wish I had longer on the island and was quite at home with all the practical work going on. So if anyone needs a helping hand with any farm work I am open to offers!!
