In September a planning application was submitted for the construction of two new buildings on the historic Jamestown Wharf. The buildings – including a freight warehouse and a two-storey passenger terminal – had been designed without properly consulting the Trust. Although the Trust strongly supports the need for improved passenger facilities on the Wharf, we were concerned that the buildings were so out of scale with the surrounding historic East India Company wharf buildings. The development could lead to the Wharf being placed on the World Monuments at Risk register, harming any moves to designate St Helena as a World Heritage Site. The Trust was also concerned that the environmental impact assessment prepared for the scheme was not fit for purpose. Although the Trust expressed these reservations in writing and in person, the Governor and his Council approved the development on 1st December. The Trust has offered to provide new designs for the passenger terminal, but it remains to see whether these will be considered.
