1502 Juan de Nova
  Commodore of a Portuguese fleet who discovered the Island on the 21st May during a return voyage from India.
1515-1545 Fernando Lopez
1584 Japanese Ambassadors
1588 Captain Cavendish
  First Englishmen to visit St Helena.
1593 Captain Lancaster
  First voyage to India by English merchants. Remained here for 19 days
1659 John Dutton
  First E.I.C Governor, built a fort on the site of the current 'Castle'.
1673 Captain Richard Munden
  Re-claimed the Island from the Dutch with the help of 'Black Oliver'.
1676 Edmond Halley
  Astronomer after whom Halley's Comet is named - Observed a transit of Mercury on the Island and produced a catalogue of the Southern stars.
1691 Captain W. Dampier
  An explorer, naturalist and navigator after whom 'Dampier's Drip' is named on Ascension.
1708 Governor Roberts
  Rebuilt the Castle fort as it stands now.
1736 Old Will
  Slave from the original settlement died aged 104!
1740 Captain Jenkins
  Famous for the 'Battle of Jenkins ear', Came to clean up the Government when at war with Spain and lived in a cottage close to Sandy Bay.
1761 Dr. and Waddington, Mr. Maskelyne
  Astronomers who visited the Island to observe a transit of Venus.
1764 Captain Cook
  Called on his return from the Antarctic aboard Resolution. Reports that at the time were 600 soldiers and 1400 slaves present here.
